“André Bruyns, former assistant winemaker to David and Nadia Sadie, is now vineyard manager at Swartland property Lammershoek (recently under new ownership). He did not release any wines form the 2021 vintage under his City on a Hill label due to difficult trading circumstances but he’s back with a bang with his 2022 new releases.

The Swartland is synonymous with grand expressions of Cinsault and with this 2022 vintage, Andre Bruyns has created a true work of vinous art from a vineyard planted in 1998. The aromatics are intense and floral with the 30% whole bunch fermentation adding extra layers of interest on the nose. The wine is packed full of sweet raspberry pastille, earthy strawberry, raisined red cherries, pressed rose petals, light soy and subtle sea breeze maritime notes of kelp and oyster shells. In the mouth, there is a brilliantly sleek, silky medium bodied depth of red and black berry fruits showing impressive depth, harmonious textural mouthfeel and glycerol opulence. The layers of cherry and spicy plum are accented by earthy bramble berry hints enlivened by beautifully finessed tannins and a fresh, tight knit acidity. This wine is the work of a true craftsman confident in his art. Ready to drink on release but packed with plenty of tantalising concentration to see it age beneficially over 10+ years in your cellar.
