Exceptional wine shouldn’t be an annual indulgence, and with our New Best Everyday Deals—10% off any 6 bottles—it doesn’t have to be. And there’s no better place to start than with two extraordinary new arrivals from Spioenkop, one of Elgin’s most compelling and conversation-worthy producers.
Belgian-born Koen Roose has been crafting some of South Africa’s most distinctive cool-climate wines at Spioenkop since 2008. His Chenins, named for formidable women of the Anglo-Boer War, and his precision-made Pinotage and Riesling have earned international acclaim and a loyal following among collectors. Despite a life-changing accident in 2022, Koen’s relentless kanniedood spirit shines through more vividly than ever, and the latest releases are testament to both his resilience and his mastery.
Today, we’re thrilled to offer two newly arrived wines,
each just awarded top ratings by Greg Sherwood MW:
Sarah Raal Chenin Blanc 2021
From ferricrete soils and cool Elgin breezes, a tense, finely chiselled Chenin named for one of South Africa’s most courageous heroines.
Pinotage 2021
Koen was the first to plant Pinotage in Elgin, convinced the variety’s Pinot Noir lineage belonged in this cool-climate valley. The results? Elegant, spicy, Burgundian-tinged brilliance.
Perfect for discovering something extraordinary… and even better with 10% off any 6.
Elevate your everyday drinking. Celebrate great value. Discover why Spioenkop continues to captivate critics and drinkers alike.

“The 2021 vintage yielded some incredibly focused, taut and powerful Chenin Blancs across the Cape and this delightful expression from Spioenkop offers up complex aromatics of talc and musk, lemon sherbet, white peach, green apples and exotic tangerine citrus nuances. Like most of the best 2021 expressions, this Chenin Blanc possesses a notable fruit concentration and a piercing crystalline focus with rich, tart layers of tangy acidity, zesty green apple fruits, pear and a crisp white peach finish. Fleshy, taut, and perfectly precise, this is yet another superb cool climate Chenin Blanc example for the converts. Drink now to 2040+.” – Greg Sherwood MW.Â

“Koen Roose has a formidable reputation for cool climate Pinotage from the Elgin Valley and this 2021 typifies everything that is great about Koen’s classical winemaking prowess and the excellence of the cool 2021 vintage. The aromatics are bold and exotic with complex layers of coconut husk, sweet bruleed cedar oak spice, black plum, blueberries and a smoky wood ember intricacy. But its on the palate that you see the steely drive, focus and precision of the 2021 vintage to full effect, with the cool purple, blue and black berry fruits firmly anchored to a vibrant vein of bright, tart, tangy acidity. The texture is taut and linear, the texture intense, crisp, and piercing, with gently unfolding layers of dark forest berry fruits adding plenty of interest. This wine speaks with an accent of Old-World classicism, showing intensity and power with weightless concentration and a steely reserve. This is undoubtedly what premium Pinotage is all about. Drink now and over the next 10-15 years.“ – Greg Sherwood MW.Â
