Pale lemon straw colour with a clean nose of unexpected linear purity of fruit, such as white peach, pineapple, apple and pear notes, rounded with a touch of chalkiness, earthy stone minerality. On the palate the layered complexity of mandarin zest, apple, pickling spices, white citrus/jasmine blossoms, grapefruit pith and a fine minerality surprise. The beautifully balanced acidity and the intense core make a wine that is fresh, crisp and elegant with tremendous depth.

Description

The story behind the name: Sarah Raal belonged to a wealthy Boer and farmers family whereby her brothers and father went to combat during the Anglo-Boer War, and her mother and younger siblings to concentration camps. Being left alone, she decided to take up weapons and join the war together with the Boers against the British.

The 2021 Sarah Raal is back to the roots: only grapes grown on ferricrete and made 100% in stainless steel. And we’re happy to be back with the original one! No yeast or enzymes added, as per usual.

Tasting Notes

Greg Sherwood 95

The 2021 vintage yielded some incredibly focused, taut and powerful Chenin Blancs across the Cape and this delightful expression from Spioenkop offers up complex aromatics of talc and musk, lemon sherbet, white peach, green apples and exotic tangerine citrus nuances. Like most of the best 2021 expressions, this Chenin Blanc possesses a notable fruit concentration and a piercing crystalline focus with rich, tart layers of tangy acidity, zesty green apple fruits, pear and a crisp white peach finish. Fleshy, taut, and perfectly precise, this is yet another superb cool climate Chenin Blanc example for the converts. Drink now to 2040+. [Greg Sherwood MW, 15/04/2026]

Baked pears and marmalade on the nose. And jasmine. Weight and texture of slub silk, with the sharp, crunchy bite of apricots and only-just-ripe nectarines. Honey lingering backstage, lime throwing its light centre stage, dried tarragon bringing delicately fragrant bitterness. This is exactly the kind of wine you want with roast chicken.
