from the Médoc
This Haut-Médoc property, bought in 1985, is of particular sentimental value to the family as Maryse Meyre is herself originally from Cussac Fort Médoc. Château Julien neighbours the great terroirs of Saint Julien, the vines nestling on gravelly marls producing fruity, generous wines boasting harmonious tannins, in a style that has long made the reputation of Haut-Médoc. A rich and complex wine, with notes of blackcurrant and morello cherry. The delicate and velvety tannins linger beautifully in the mouth.
Situated in Moulis-en-Médoc this property dates back to 1457 when the first proprietor was Jean de Foix Grailly. The Château was re-built in 1853 as it stands today. The property is some 220ha with 51ha under vines. The property was bought on 4th August 2011 by Lilian and Michel Barton Sartorius the owners of Châteaux Léoville and Langoa Barton in Saint Julien. Following completion of her studies in Dijon their daughter Melanie return to help with the new project in 2013 and alongside cellar-master Bruno Petit set about improving the vineyards. Melanie’s brother, Damien, is also involved with the sales and marketing of the properties wines. This wine has a fairly intense purple colour. On the nose, it reveals a beautiful expression of the fruit with a dominance of blackberry aroma and a lightly toasted side. It is balanced with a fine body, a dense and suave substance. The tannins are supple and soft.
Château Castelbruck is the second wine of Château Haut Breton Larigaudière, a 15 hectare Margaux estate between Soussans and Arsac bought by the current owners, the Schepper family, in the 60s. Soils are a combination of deep gravel, sand and clay. After a cold maceration, fermentation takes place in both concrete and stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in oak, 25% new, for 12 months followed by a further 8 months in stainless steel vats. The estate is HVE certified and managed sustainably. Generous, deep and brambley with cedar spiced oak on the nose which mellows if decanted. The palate is rich and robust with lovely plum and herbal characters, a supple tannic structure. Open well in advance of drinking or decant to enjoy this very characterful Margaux at its best.
The 2016 Fleur de Pedesclaux is a Bordeaux blend of 67% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Petit Verdot. It presents an ethereal profile with aromas of cherry, blueberry, and a hint of cocoa. On the palate, the wine is soft and gentle, thanks to the high proportion of Merlot, offering a silky texture and fresh, appealing flavours.
