Earlier this week, we introduced the Winshaw brothers’ remarkable Stellenbosch Malbec and the extraordinary story of their great-grandfather, Dr William Charles Winshaw. Long before he founded Stellenbosch Farmers Winery and helped shape modern South African wine, Charles was simply a twelve-year-old boy who ran away from home in Kentucky. That restless spirit would carry him across America, through the Klondike gold rush, into medicine, aboard a ship bound for the Anglo-Boer War, and ultimately to Stellenbosch, where he changed the course of South African wine history. The Winshaw brothers named one of their most distinctive wines The Runaway in tribute to that remarkable journey. And fittingly, it has become something of a runaway success itself. Fresh from recent trade tastings, Daniel reports it was one of the wines that sommeliers, buyers and fellow wine professionals kept returning to. Produced with gentle skin contact, it has a wonderful textural depth that sets it apart from conventional Pinot Gris while retaining freshness, energy and remarkable drinkability. It’s exactly the sort of bottle we’ve come to expect from the Winshaws: thoughtful, individual and rooted in a family story that continues to evolve with every vintage. |
