5 Stars | Platter’s Wine Guide 2025
The last vintage made by Rüdger van Wyk, Kara-Tara, is redefining elegance. This Chardonnay, sourced from cool-climate sites in Elgin, Overberg, and Stellenbosch, is a masterclass in finesse and freshness, with bright citrus acidity, leesy texture, and judicious oak. Named for a small town in the Cape’s cool Southern coast. Translated from the Khoisan language, it means “deep dark shadows” and refers to the Karatara river that runs through the town.

95 Points & Gold Medal – Decanter World Wine Awards 2025
“A cornucopia of melon, nectarine and lemon sizzles alongside the pithy texture and succulent acidity, with a dash of cooling menthol to seal the deal.” – Decanter.
5 Stars – Platter’s Wine Guide 2025 | 16.5 Points – Tamlyn Currin | 93 + Points Greg Sherwood MW
“Finesse, freshness & ageability reflective of 2023 & its cool sites in Overberg, Elgin & Stellenbosch. Mouthwatering citrus-fruity acid & leesy richness, with a light dusting of oak spice merge into delightful complexity with greater tapering length.” – Platter’s Wine Guide 2025.
“Rudger van Wyk’s last vintage. From three vineyards, in the Overberg, Elgin & Stellenbosch. Vineyards face the ocean, get the cool evening breeze. Some malo. Barrel fermented, some lees stirring for six months. Yellow plum and pineapple. Gorse bush and quinine. Very clear, bright with a little bit of whipped white butter from the barrels. Crisp, green-apple acidity. Like grand cru Chablis, but just less expensive.” – Tamlyn Currin.
“This classy 2023 Chardonnay was fermented and matured for 9 months in older French oak barriques and with a cool, lean 12.5% alcohol, the wine shows a decidedly taut, steely, mineral European-leaning styling. The aromatics show grated lemon peel, white each, dried herbs and intense wet stone granitic minerality. In the mouth, the wine is restrained and incredibly subtle, tightly wound and beautifully fresh with layers of lemon and lime, lemon grass, pineapple and tart green apple with a delicate dusting of leesy, mealy savoury complexity on the finish. Beautifully sleek, cool and restrained, this classy wine still packs a lot of punch while retaining a real sense of minerality. Drink on release and over the next 3 to 6 years.” – Greg Sherwood MW.
