An intriguing bouquet of guava and quince, framed by subtle vanilla notes. The palate is complex and finely textured with a mix of stone and citrus fruit and creamy, spicy flavours. The finish is long with a persistent minerality. This is an age-worthy Chenin from a cool, high-altitude site.

Description

Chenin Blanc is a relatively rare variety in our area of Stellenbosch but the higher, cooler slopes and granite soils are well suited to producing an intense, mineral style. is complex, finely-crafted Chenin Blanc was matured in neutral French oak barrels to build texture on the palate.

Details of vinification and oaking:
The grapes were hand-picked in several vineyard passes and chilled before pressing. De-stemming, crushing and light pressing then took place followed by overnight settling of the juice. A portion of the grapes was whole-bunch pressed to help preserve the acidity. This complex, finely-crafted Chenin Blanc was matured in neutral French oak barrels. The wine was on its lees for 9 months and given regular stirrings. After settling naturally, the wine was carefully racked and then given a light fining and bottled with no filtration.

Tasting Notes

Tim Atkin 94

Even more impressive when you learn that this comes from a six-year-old vineyard in the cool Jonkershoek Valley, this is a subtle, racy, refined expression of Chenin Blanc that has the raciness of a Sauvignon Blanc. Petrichor, jasmine and aniseed aromas segue into a palate of citrus, greengage and pink grapefruit embellished by 15% new oak. 2026-32 [Tim Atkin MW, 01/09/2026]

Greg Sherwood 96+

The Monk Stone 2025 Chenin Blanc sees this wine return to the top of its game, taking full advantage of this incredible vintage in the Cape. Rich, intense and powerful, this Chenin reveals punchy aromatics of green melon, white peach blossom, ripe yellow apples, pear puree and a dusting of savoury biscuit complexity, mealy leesy vanilla notes and wet thatch nuances. The palate shows an optimally ripe block buster weight, focus and textural power with a super intense cordial like concentration, tangy green apple and white peach fruits, tart pineapple chunks and a long, mouth watering acid freshness on the finish. Only the very best vintages offer this kind of intensity combined with harmony and balance. Simply stunning. Drink now to 2035+. [Greg Sherwood MW, 17/05/2026]
