Description
Region
The Swartland starts approximately 80km north of Cape Town, the climatic conditions change to become warmer and drier. Located deep inside one of the Paardeberg mountain valleys, the Waterval farm benefits from a little higher rainfall and slightly cooler temperatures than the region averages.
Grapes and Vineyard
Shiraz became one of the most important varieties of the Swartland, thriving in the conditions and reflecting the different terroirs perfectly. This vineyard is planted on deep sandy granite soils with sections of decomposing rock. Cool shady mornings and warm afternoon sun concentrates flavours without dehydration being problematic. The wine reflects this site perfectly having better fruit purity and being more elegant in style.
Vinification
With the grape bunches and berries being small and stems thin and fragile, Shiraz perfectly lends itself to 100% whole bunch fermentations. Easy extractions result in an elegant structure but still
with gripping tannins. For the first time, a component passively extracted and aged on its skins for over 154 days was included in this
vintage. Matured in older oak barrels for 15 months.
Winemaker’s comments
The 2024 vintage had hot, fast ripening conditions, but yet we have managed to keep freshness and energy in the wine. Delicate floral notes of dried rose petals with graphite, warm earth and fynbos. On the palate, juicy red and plush black fruits are supported by cured meat, white and black pepper. The mouth-feel is rather generous and fluid with silkier tannins and a vibrant red-currant edge. The mid-palate is full and has a density filled with juicy strawberry and blackberry. The tannins are firm and has a structural presence supporting this wine’s bold presence. A vintage wine with great bottle
aging possibilities. Proper decanting recommended when opened young.
