The Paardeberg Mountain rises above the rolling wheat fields on the southern border of the Swartland. Approximately 80km north of Cape Town, the climatic conditions changes to become warmer and drier. Since the 1700’s this region was identified to be superior for the production of fortified wines such as Ports and Sherries, and varieties like Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barocca was therefore already established.

Description

CELLAR INFORMATION Small batch natural ferments with mostly whole bunches. Light extractions with 1 to 2 punchdowns daily. Early pressing, with a maximum of 5 days on skins post ferment. The result of this is maximum aromatics, and an elegant juicy palate.
An 11 month maturation follows in big old seasoned oak barrels. The wine is bottled without
fining and only a light filtration. VINEYARD INFORMATION The decision to work with Touriga Nacional came naturally as it is a variety that thrives in hot and
dry conditions. The vineyard was planted in 2007 on deep sandy granitic soils with a north westerly
aspect. A hot slope, but it still enjoys cool shady mornings as a result of the steep valley. The Touriga fares exceptionally well with great
balance in fruit and small bunches with small, concentrated berries bursting with flavour. The
grape has a natural high acidity and low pH which is perfect for these climatic conditions.

This delicious 2021 Touriga Nacional from Jasper Wickens is made from vines planted in deep granitic soils on cooler mountain slopes in the Swartland, with grapes harvested earlier to retain a freshness and elegance easily lost in this warm region. Naturally whole bunch fermented and treated to a very gentle extraction, this cooler vintage red show s this Portuguese cultivar s true heritage with lifted aromatics of floral purple flowers, lilac, earthy bramble berries, black berries and black plum with undertones of smoked meats, bresaola, fireplace wood embers and a subtle sappy wood spice. The palate is equally impressive with plenty of overt juicy black and earthy red berry fruits that really shine under the coolness of the wines modest 13% alcohol. Elegant and complex, the wine retains a wonderfully soft texture and mid-palate balance with fine sweet silky tannins and notes of bruleed orange peel, grilled herbs and sweet savoury black berries. The finish sees an understated but concentrated length with a gracefully dense persistence, making this a really very attractive and appealing Touriga Nacional expression. Drink on release and over the next 3 to 5+ years. – Greg Sherwood MW. [Greg Sherwood, 01/01/2023]
