Gabriëlskloof is a beautiful wine estate located near Bot River in the Overberg region east of Cape Town. It was purchased in 2001 by Bernhard Heyns, who had been on the lookout for the ideal place to plant vines. We felt compelled to add Gabriëlskloof to our list when the talented Peter-Allan Finlayson of Crystallum, Bernhard’s son in law, took over as winemaker from the 2015 vintage. Peter-Allan is now Cellar Master and oversees general management of the property, while the young and no less talented Nina Muller was promoted to winemaker. The farm has 178 hectares, with 68 hectares planted with vines. The climate is cool with maritime influences coming from Walker Bay. The vineyards are farmed sustainably with the support of fulltime vineyard consultant Rosa Kruger. Their aim is to move to organic farming in the future.
Description
The 2022 Gabriëlskloof Whole Bunch Shiraz is a medium-bodied wine that combines vibrant red and black berries with floral and herbal notes. Whole bunch fermented, it offers a crisp nose of blackcurrant, raspberry, and pressed violet, with a palate marked by brittle tannins and a chalky texture, finishing with a hint of licorice. Aged for eight months in stainless steel, it’s fresh, juicy, and well-balanced with crunchy tannins. Scoring 94 points from Vinous, this wine offers a complex and ethereal profile, ideal for drinking now or cellaring until 2042. Produced by Peter-Allan Finlayson at Gabriëlskloof, a farm with a focus on sustainable practices.
Reviews
Daniel Grigg NR
This vintage of the Whole Bunch Syrah is floral, earthy and intensely complex, showing a dense core of black and red fruits and white pepper that again nods towards the northern Rhone. The palate is not without tannin or acidity but is led by pure fruit and a touch of aromatic spice. [Daniel Grigg, 01/03/2023]
