Description
Cinsault has long been a signature grape for Natte Valleij, and this stunning 2021 release highlights its continued relevance in the Cape wine scene. From a collection of old dryland bush vines across five distinct regions—Wellington, Simonsberg-Paarl, Darling, Swartland, and Stellenbosch—this wine captures the essence of each unique terroir through minimal intervention winemaking. Native fermented with up to 30% stalks and partial whole bunches, the wine spent a year aging in old oak barrels, foudre, and concrete eggs, creating a complex yet vibrant profile.
On the nose, expect wild raspberry, cherry, and plum, with hints of scrubby fynbos adding a distinctive regional character. The palate is juicy and light, with fine tannins and a fresh, peppery finish. With its beautiful balance of fruit, structure, and typicity, this is a wine that defines South African Cinsault and showcases the potential of this once-overlooked varietal.

Producer Profile
Natte Valleij, a historic family farm in Stellenbosch run by winemaker Alex Milner, has received critical acclaim for his site specific Cinsault from various pockets of extraordinary old vine parcels across the Cape. Tamlyn Currin writes: “It was the first time I’d tasted Cinsault. It was the first time I actually understood the variety. It was a lightning strike.” Together with his stellar Axle Chenin Blanc from Darling. Tamlyn writes: “Alex Milner pushes the edges of possibility and beauty. He always takes my breath away. Surely this cannot be under £30?!” The stage has been set, heroing the adopted heritage grapes of South Africa, finally allowing them freedom of expression. As well as our very own, native Pinotage – Alex and his Natte Valleij wines represent the spirit of the Cape and we’d strongly advise you visit him and his wines during Cape Wine.
