Overgaauw Wine Estate in Stellenbosch was an early champion of a Bordeaux-style blend. In 1979, a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cinsaut blend named Tria Corda was launched. Then in 1982, a more classic approach was taken by replacing the Cinsaut with Cabernet Franc. These 3 classic Bordeaux varietals have remained the components ever since. Tria Corda is a Latin translation for 3 hearts and refers to these 3 varietals that form the heart of the Overgaauw Wine Estate’s unique terroir.

This Tria Corda is a full-bodied Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet
Franc. Its seductively perfumed nose offers generous layers of cassis, raspberry, cedar and a touch of
spice. The nose follows through onto a silky, well-balanced palate that delivers fine tannins and a long,
concentrated finish – the perfect foil for the wine’s brilliant fruit. Its complex structure and fruit vibrance
will ensure at least 10 years ageing potential.

This is the story behind South Africa’s first bottled single varietal Merlot. Upon discovering the Merlot vines he planted in 1973 were infected with leafroll virus, Braam van Velden set out to find healthy virus-free vines. After an extensive search, new Italian clone Merlot vines were obtained and planted in 1979. “Our first vintage from this block was in 1982. The wine was so impressive that we deemed it worthy to be bottled on its own. This also prompted us to extend the wine’s time in the small oak barrels to nine months, which was a long time in those days.” When the Merlot was bottled in 1983, it was the first single varietal South African Merlot on the market.
