But as Tamlyn Currin recently observed, a quiet revolution is underway — one that’s reshaping the identity of this historic region into something far more compelling: wines of freshness, finesse, and immediacy.
Enter Stéphane Revel.
A former IT engineer turned winemaker, Revel took over Château de Rouffiac in 2022 with a clear vision: to unite tradition with modern thinking, guided by regenerative viticulture and a deep respect for the land. Working across the varied limestone and siderolithic soils of the Lot Valley, his aim is simple, healthier soils, more balanced vines, and ultimately, more expressive wines.
The result? Cahors Malbec that feels completely redefined. Still unmistakably true to its origins, mineral, herbal, dark-fruited, but now with clarity, lift, and drinkability at its core.

Notes of black plum, blueberry, damson and bramble fruit, tomato leaf, eucalyptus and purple flowers, specifically violet, that is reminiscent of wines made from grapes grown in Morgon’s Côte de Py vineyard. Aged in concrete, which preserves the wine’s freshness and retains a coolness at its core. This is a very fine Malbec indeed.” – Daniel Grigg.
