From the sixth-generation Meyre family in the heart of the Médoc comes Château Julien 2020 (£19.99) and its immensely drinkable sibling Petit Julien 2022 (£14.99) , wines that prove classic Bordeaux doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive.
Château Julien is a charming 15-hectare estate in the Haut-Médoc near Cussac-Fort-Médoc, planted to 40-year-old vines and purchased by the family in 1985. Owned and run by Nathalie and Julien Meyre, heirs to a Médoc dynasty that has owned Château Cap Léon Veyrin since 1810, the property carries both pedigree and sentiment. Named for its proximity to the hallowed vineyards of Saint-Julien, it delivers that unmistakable Left Bank structure and finesse at a fraction of the price.
Meanwhile, Petit Julien 2022, a beautifully balanced 50/50 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend, has quickly become one of our top sellers since we began working directly with the Meyres in early 2023. It’s approachable, polished and remarkably good value, making it an easy weekday claret that overdelivers.

A rich and complex wine, with notes of blackcurrant and morello cherry. The delicate and velvety tannins linger beautifully in the mouth.
Le Petit Julien is de facto the second wine of Château Cap Leon Veyrin, even though some grapes are bought in for this wine. Deep ruby red colour with a hint of garnet. NOSE A complex bouquet of blackberries, cherries, and plums, intertwined with earthy notes of cedar, tobacco, and a touch of leather. PALATE Medium-bodied on the palate, featuring a harmonious balance of dark fruit flavours, firm tannins, and subtle oak influences. Notes of blackcurrant, raspberry, and a hint of vanilla provide a smooth, lingering finish.
