Axle Chenin Blanc began as the latter.
In 2018, Alex Milner made a small amount of Chenin Blanc at Natte Valleij for his wife — his only white wine, from a single old, ocean-facing Darling vineyard planted in 1985. When he realised that 360 bottles was far too much for one household, he quietly offered half to us at Museum Wines.
That first commercial release went on to earn Platter’s Five Stars, and Axle has since become one of South Africa’s most sought-after, under-the-radar Chenins — luminous, precise, quietly profound. Every vintage sells out fast, often before customers realise it’s landed.
The 2025 vintage is currently on the water and will arrive this spring.
With previous vintages disappearing almost immediately on release, this is one to secure before it reaches our shelves.
Axle is Alex Milner distilled: old bush-vine Chenin, dry-farmed, spontaneously fermented, matured gently on lees, and made with the same unplugged, minimalist philosophy that has earned his wines cult status worldwide. It’s textured yet taut, generous yet disciplined — a wine that drinks beautifully now, but rewards patience just as generously.
This is not a hype wine.
