Description
The word ‘Ronkedoor’ means ‘hermit’ in Afrikaans. The label sketch is based on an old Afrikaans fable about a quiet recluse of a man who rescues a little mouse from the claws of an owl, and raises her as his own.
One day however the man realises that he is becoming too old to care for the little mouse and goes in search of a husband for her. They go on an epic search, consulting the sun, the wind and the mountains to find her a man strong enough to care for her as the Ronkedoor had.
Producer Profile
De Kleine Wijn Koöp (the little wine co-op) started out as just a few good okes making awesome wines with cool labels, calling in winemaker friends to make each very limited-batch cuvée. Now in the talented hands of winemaker Wynand Grobler, the range has gained greater focus and direction without losing any of the original irreverence and adventure. Given Wynand’s experience in the valley, Franschhoek is becoming a bit of a calling card but like in the past the “little co-op” spreads its net far and wide seeking out great grapes across the beautiful and varied terroirs of the Cape winelands.

While Wynand Grobler s small winery is located in Tulbagh, this impressive Shiraz is made from grapes sourced in the Walker Bay region. Fabulously deep purple black in colour, the 2022 offers up attractive aromatics of crushed black berries, warm plums, sweet violets, hoisin plum sauce, and Black Forest Gateau dusted with freshly ground black pepper and subtle hints of fynbos and cured meats. On the palate the wine is medium to full-bodied, coating the mouth with fleshy black berry and blueberry fruits, creamy textural tannins and yet more complexing incense, pepper and cinnamon Christmas spices. An impressive Shiraz that revels in its own uniqueness, remaining fresh and vibrant with a cool coastal vein of acidity on a long, perfumed finish. Delicious right down to the very last sip. Drink on release and over the next 5 to 8 years. [Greg Sherwood MW, 17/09/2024]
