The project was born when the French-Danish Rousset family travelled to the southwest coast of South Africa, and the name Idun came from the Norse goddess of eternal life, fertility and apples – for which Elgin is famous. The grapes for Nuit Eternelle are hand-harvested with 40% whole bunches for fermentation, and the 2019 was matured slightly longer than normal over 16 months in 30% new French oak barrels. Greg Sherwood MW: Layers of blackberry compote, black-fruit pastries and subtle vanilla wood spice. Plush and harmonious, broad but fabulously elegant, enlivened by refreshing acids and lovely clarity. Classy. Daniel Grigg: Richly textured and defined by dense black fruit, liquorice and fatty biltong. Roger Jones: Blackberry crumble on the nose, refined and elegant mid-palate. A luxurious but delicate wine that shows hints of cocoa and cassis along with a lovely fresh brightness.
Description
The 2019 Nuit Eternelle Syrah offers a captivating deep color, accompanied by a savory bouquet of black olive, spicy fruit, violet, and white pepper aromas. On the palate, it reveals berry fruit flavors complemented by fine, ripe tannins and a refreshing acidity that adds elegance and ensures the wine’s longevity. The handpicked grapes were fermented spontaneously in open-top tanks, with 60% destemmed and 40% left as whole bunches. The wine spent 16 months maturing in French oak barrels (30% new), resulting in a balanced and refined Syrah with excellent aging potential.
