“A qualified industrial engineer, “”crazy Belgian”” Koen learned to make wine at L’Avenir before embarking with his wife Lore on the long search for their own farm. Historically an apple growing region Elgin is now regarded as a premium vine growing area. 300m above sea level, at Spioenkop cooling sea breezes funnel down the valley which prolongs the growing period. Slopes are steep so no tractor can operate and there are 7 different soil structures on the farm. Each cultivar is planted on a different soil all of which are quite stony and make the vines work hard. Their first wines were bottled in 2010. The Johanna Brandt comes from the lower section of the Chenin Blanc vineyard which sits on shale. As a result, it is the more powerful of the two Spioenkop Chenin Blanc wines, and has a slightly more tropical fruit profile. This wine is aged in oak, whereas the Sarah Raal sees mostly stainless steel. It is a powerful wine with rich fruit on the palate and a lovely acid line (as with all Spioenkop wines).”

Description

CELLAR INFORMATION Hand-picked grapes in small 18 kg crates, overnight in the cool store (10°C) and then destemmed and slightly crushed. 4 h juice extraction/skin-contact in a red fermentor. The grape-skins were slowly pressed in our stainless steel basket press (JLB 5). VINEYARD INFORMATION Johanna Brandt is born out of our shale rocky soil and reflects purity and power in her style of wine (see her pH level). She comes from the same vineyard like Sarah Raal but has a totally different soil formation and structure. Sarah Raal is on ferricrete while our Johanna Brandt has shale soil.

Full bottle 1,403 g. 100% Chenin Blanc. The Johanna Brandt comes from the lower section of the Chenin Blanc vineyard on shale soils. Aged in oak. One sniff of this wine and I was smitten. Toast and tangerine, lemon marmalade and candied angelica. It has a spine-tingling intensity, a pirouette of peach, the shimmer flare of a peacock tail. It dances, teases; one moment rich and oak-curved sensuous, the next sharp as the glitter of an elvin blade. It’s honey, warm hay and chamomile; it’s gold dust on tarnished pewter; it’s dawn light on the soft cheek of a sleeping lover; it’s honeysuckle blossoms on the gravel after heavy rain; it’s a kintsugi bowl of bronze tears. Tasting this, I want to say, ‘Johanna Brandt, meet Lindsey Stirling; Lindsey Stirling, meet Johanna Brandt. You have everything in common’. Outstanding. [Tamlyn Currin, 23/07/2021]

Lemon straw colour with a clean nose of tropical ripe fruit and orange blossoms. We smell here some citrus fruit zest, baked apple, marzipan and spices from ginger and lemon pepper. On the palate there is the layered complexity of some nuttiness from the barrel maturation with bruised apple, peach and nuances of wild yeast and eartyness. Pickling spices and dried peach come through with a fine minerality. Beautifully balanced acidity and intense core. [Daniel Grigg, 01/03/2019]
