Description

The 2018 Holden Manz Big G is a dark ruby wine that offers an enticing nose of ripe dark fruit, graphite, and cassis, with subtle herbal notes of thyme and a touch of blueberry. Hints of cedar and pencil shavings add complexity and depth. On the palate, it’s soft and voluptuous, with well-integrated tannins that give the wine a rich, creamy texture and a refreshing burst of cassis. The mid-palate is silky smooth, leading to a finish full of dark fruit flavors and a long, lingering aftertaste. The wine’s great tension and balance make it a striking expression of Franschhoek’s terroir, perfect for pairing with grilled meats, roasted game, or aged cheeses.

Producer Profile

A family owned wine producer located in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley. Established by owners Gerard Holden (a British investment banker in another life) & Migo Manz in 2010. The 22ha estate is situated between the Franschhoek River and Stony Brook at 300m above sea level.  With only 16 ha under vine, their focus has always been red grape varieties, though their stellar white wines, from the reserve Chardonnay, to the Chenin Blanc, and now Semillon requires further inspection. Best you read the critic’s notes and taste, to see for yourself!
