Description
Serve the wine around 10 degrees. Perfect with poached cod with clarified butter and boiled potatoes, grilled swordfish and nice with a tasty fish and seafood stew,
Elegant and mineral-driven wine with flavors of yellow apples, white peach, citrus and almond blossom. The acid is fresh and the body is full. The aftertaste is pleasantly long..
Producer Profile
Kara-Tara is a joint-venture between Rudger van Wyk and José Conde of Stark-Condé Wines.
The name Kara-Tara refers to a small town near Knysna, where winemaker Rudger van Wyk grew up. Translated from the traditional Khoisan, it means “deep dark shadows” and refers to the Karatara river that runs through the town.
Grapes are sourced from carefully-selected premium vineyards in the Western Cape. This wine has the classic notes of lemon & grapefruit you’d expect from Chardonnay, with hints of almond & a fine, mineral finish.
Tasting Notes
Greg Sherwood 93+
This classy 2023 Chardonnay was fermented and matured for 9 months in older French oak barriques and with a cool, lean 12.5% alcohol, the wine shows a decidedly taut, steely, mineral European-leaning styling. The aromatics show grated lemon peel, white each, dried herbs and intense wet stone granitic minerality. In the mouth, the wine is restrained and incredibly subtle, tightly wound and beautifully fresh with layers of lemon and lime, lemon grass, pineapple and tart green apple with a delicate dusting of leesy, mealy savoury complexity on the finish. Beautifully sleek, cool and restrained, this classy wine still packs a lot of punch while retaining a real sense of minerality. Drink on release and over the next 3 to 6 years. Yellow plum and pineapple. Gorse bush and quinine. Very clear, bright with a little bit of whipped white butter from the barrels. Crisp, green-apple acidity. Like grand cru Chablis, but just less expensive. (TC) [Tamlyn, 22/02/2024]
