“Uva Mira benefits from the location of its mountain vineyards, which are 620 metres above sea level at their highest point, as the climate falls into category two on the Winkler Scale. In layman’s terms this means it has a lot more in common with vineyards in France than their South African neighbours. This, alongside the decomposed granite soils, allows them to produce wines which are the finest expression of terroir we’ve seen from anywhere in the New World. The Mira Sauvignon Blanc expresses itself with far greater vivacity and vibrancy than its elegant and finessed partner, Sing-a-Wing. Packed full of ripe tropical guava, green apple and lime peel it surpasses any effort from Marlborough at this price or even higher.”

Description

CELLAR INFORMATION At our cellar every individual berry is meticulously hand selected on our sorting table, ensuring only the very best are used for making our fine wines. Attention to detail is our focus, with the ultimate care taken for each and every grap VINEYARD INFORMATION Our Sauvignon Blanc vines are planted on the highest vineyards on the Estate, on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain range, facing False Bay. The early morning breezes cool the vines, which contributes to the superb natural acidity in the grapes. Decomposed granite soils contribute to the minerality on the palate.

"The Western Cape winelands, and Stellenbosch in particular, has this inexplicable ability to produce some of the most intricate and beguiling styles of Sauvignon Blanc anywhere in the world. At Uva Mira, they have harnessed the cool climate effects of not only their proximity to the Atlantic Ocean but also the cooling influences of their high-altitude mountain vineyards, some of which rise to up to 620 metres above sea level, to good effect. As temperamental as Sauvignon Blanc can be, this 2021 expression is simply the personification of mouth-watering joy. Offering up aromatics of ripe nectarines, gooseberries, green mango, lemongrass and pineapple, this is not where the descriptives stop because beneath the succulent tropical fruit complexity lies a fabulous granitic minerality that carries through to the harmonious medium-bodied palate, before melting away as the bright tangy grapefruit acids make a reprise on the finish. Simply put, this is an incredibly thrilling wine to drink and one that showcases all the character, class and exoticism that has allowed South Africa s top Sauvignon Blanc examples to rival the very best expressions coming out of Marlborough in New Zealand. Even in winter, every day feels like summer when you have a glass of Sauvignon Blanc like this in your hand. Enjoy now and over the next 3 to 5+ years. – Greg Sherwood MW. Producer Profile

Given owner Toby Venter’s assumed need for speed, as CEO of LSM Distributors, responsible for Porsche and Lamborghini in South Africa, as well as the owners of Kyalami race track, his purchase of Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards in 2013, up against the slopes of the Helderberg seems in direct contrast to this high octane lifestyle.

Everything in wine is time. Uva Mira is named for a famous star in the constellation of Cetus (a Greek sea monster who was offered the princess Andromeda to appease Poseidon but was slain by Perseus either by sword or using Medusa’s head which turned him to stone – the details are complicated and murky). The giant red star named ‘the wonderful’ or ‘Mira’ in Latin undergoes a 332-day cycle of fading into obscurity, becoming bright, and then fading again (over almost a year), drawing parallels between winemaking and stargazing. The patience inherent to growing grapes, understanding the terroir, blending, and maturation, the once-a-year opportunity to harvest, and the celebration once you can taste the literal fruits of your labour – explains the name Uva Mira, Latin meaning The Wonderful Grape
