Description
“Die Posman” otherwise known as “The Postman”.
This wine represents a friendship that spans 8000 miles, two continents, several years of laughs, braai’s (the South African equivalent of an American barbeque), banters, mutual respect and passion for creating and enjoying the best hand-made wine South Africa has to offer. The Postman delivers ‘on time’ First Class quality that celebrates our wonderful connection and passion for living the Lekker life.” (Lekker means ‘yummy’ in Dutch. But it applies to more than just food – it’s also a feeling)
The friendship noted is that of Andy Woolgar of Elephants Corner Wines and renowned wine maker Wynand Grobler of De Kleine Wijn Koop wines. Wynand, lovingly nicknamed Andy “The Postman” because he says that whenever he calls Andy, he is out making a wine delivery like a postman, hence the likeness of Andy and the post man featured on the label. Two versions of the ‘Die Posman’ are available, a white and a red. The white is a Grenache Blanc and the red a Carignan. Andy says that “The Carignan ‘black & white’ label features black bars that represent in Wynand’s mind, a jail cell as he insists my ‘indoor cats’ are being imprisoned in my house!

The husband-and-wife team of Wynand and Anya have really excelled once again with their Grenache Blanc – a wine that is quickly garnering a loyal cult following both in South Africa and internationally. Grapes for Die Postman Grenache Blanc 2023 come from vineyards planted in the early 2000s on Riebeekberg, utilising 50% fermentation in older 500-litre oak barrels and 50% in stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation lasting circa 9 months. The aromatics reveal attractive notes of ripe pears and peaches, waxy yellow citrus over hints of stem ginger, candied citrus peel, cinnamon and delicate fynbos and potpourri spice. The palate is impressively glycerol and full in the mouth, with layers of ripe pineapple, pear puree, ripe peach, waxy orange citrus and crystallised figs lending a great breadth and depth of flavour. The finish is surprisingly perfumed and saline with a kiss of pink musk and potpourri spice to add further interest to an already exceedingly alluring offering. A perennial early sell-out offering in Wynand s wine range, you ll need to get in quick! Drink now and over the next 3 to 5 years. [Greg Sherwood MW, 17/09/2024]

Full bottle 1,351 g. Die Posman means ‘the postman’. 100% Grenache Blanc from vineyards planted in the early 2000s on Riebeekberg (in Swartland). 50% was fermented in older 500-litre oak and 50% in stainless-steel tanks, and then aged for nine months. De Kleine Wijn Koop has had various stakeholders over the years but is today run by winemaker Wynand Grobler and his wife, Anya. It s never actually been a co-operative. The Groblers seem to have coaxed out all the best gifts of Grenache Blanc from these grapes. It’s a honeyed, burnished, bronze-flowers and spiced-pomelo kind of wine. It has gingery warmth and sweetness, the fragrant sting of lime, the waxy smooch of candied citrus peel. It’s deep and broad. It’s languid but comes with an undercurrent of urgency. A terseness so hidden in the folds that you somehow want to chase it down. The finish feels like the rustle of silk and then it triangulates to a point. A point! [Tamlyn Currin, 13/08/2024]

De Kleine Wijn Koöp (the little wine co-op) started out as just a few good okes making awesome wines with cool labels, calling in winemaker friends to make each very limited-batch cuvée. Now in the talented hands of winemaker Wynand Grobler, the range has gained greater focus and direction without losing any of the original irreverence and adventure. Given Wynand’s experience in the valley, Franschhoek is becoming a bit of a calling card but like in the past the “little co-op” spreads its net far and wide seeking out great grapes across the beautiful and varied terroirs of the Cape winelands.
