In The Vineyard
Leaf fall occurred later than usual which allowed good reserves to build up in the vines. The similarly delayed onset of Winter allowed for good cold unit accumulation. Rainfall was the lowest to date. Days were warm and nights cool. Budding occurred later and flowering was uniform. A dry, warm season resulted in compact berries with some supplementary irrigation necessary. A cooler February allowed for even ripening. An abundant vintage of exceptional quality.
"The D.W. Syrah is a special 600 bottle cuvee dedicated to the visionary who first founded the estate, Des Weedon, his wife Denise, the matriarch, and their grandson Derrick, who gave the estate its Latin name. A sophisticated red wine that shows complex aromatics of bruleed coffee beans, grilled herbs, dried fynbos, black peppercorns, chimichurri spice and chargrilled barbequed meats. Elegant and seductive, the palate has a sleek alluring texture with very fine grained, polished, finessed tannins that emphasize the wines dusty granitic minerality allied to sweet cured meats, tart red and black berries and a smoky graphite undertone. The wine is luxuriously plush and expansive but also wonderfully fleshy, focused, and intense with an effortless sweet fruited power and persistence. A very distinguished Syrah made in a decidedly Northern Rhone Hermitage style. Drink now to bathe in its elegant hedonistic splendour or cellar for a further 8 to 10+ years."- Greg Sherwood MW.
