“Granted in 1715, the historic Natte Valleij and its grand old Cape Dutch buildings have been home to quite a few interesting people and produced its fair share of fine Cape Wines. One of these was an Italian prisoner of war (P.O.W.). Captured in North Africa and exiled to the Cape to spend the duration of the Second World War on the grounds of Natte Valleij. Common knowledge to have helped in the winemaking on Natte Valleij. All we have as a reminder of his stay is the inscription P.O.W. B.T. 27-12-1943. In his honour, we have hand-crafted this wine, our take on a South African Bordeaux. Traditionally vinified and focusing on the Simonsberg, so famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon based blends, matured for 36months in large oak barrels, giving that undeniable drinkability.”

In The Cellar
The juice is then aged firstly in 225L barrels for 12 months followed by 500L barrels for 24 months, this method helps to preserve the natural fruit character of the wine which could otherwise be lost in this extensive barrel ageing period that allows the wines to evolve and become fascinating.

In The Vineyard
Lovingly and painstakingly crafted with minimal interference and pretence, the old vine fruit is hand harvested and then hand sorted in the cellar to ensure only the best quality grapes are used to make the wine.
"Like all the wines at Natte Valleij, the characterful P.O.W. cuvee has its own unique story commemorating the Italian prisoner of war captured in Abyssinia, who was interned at the estate in 1943 to help with farming and possibly winemaking duties as well. The 2020 represents a luscious blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot that was matured for 36 months in large oak barrels, and reveals complex, expressive aromatics of red currant coulis, sweet sandalwood, dried rosemary and thyme herbs, pine resin, black currant and subtle hints of spearmint and milk chocolate. Wonderfully ripe and fleshy on the palate, the wine is medium to full bodied and shows a real vitality and freshness together with classical Cabernet Sauvignon varietal notes of cassis, mint, cocoa, sage, bay leaf and sweet cedary oak spice nuances on the long, tangy finish. Classy, generous, and very inviting, this wine manages to maintain a smattering of piquant rusticity that adds to its overall drinking enjoyment. Good to go now or cellar for 6 to 8+ years."
