“Developed and run by the Armstrong Family since 1999, we produce distinctive, handcrafted wines in harmony with nature. The literal translation of Haut Espoir is ‘High Hope’.

We are custodians of a 23 hectare property, of which 8 hectares are planted with shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot and cabernet franc. The remainder of the land is dedicated to fynbos restoration, a riverine ecosystem, olive groves and a vegetable and herb garden.

At Haut Espoir, winemaking goes hand in hand with conservation. We have been transitioning to Biodynamics since 2011; focusing on minimal impact to the environment with our viticultural practices, restored the environment around us and use no fungicides, insecticides or commercially bought fertilisers. Water conservation is practised daily and our winery effluent is managed through a bio-reactor and wetland system.”

It’s a real treat to be able to offer the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon from Haut Espoir alongside the 2008 which we introduced to our range last year. The earlier vintage spent longer in oak, 33 months as opposed to 22, and when I tried them side by side with the late great Rob Armstrong it was clear he had made the right decision in releasing the 2008 first.

"It smells like a baby Cab Sav! Popping with ripe cassis on the nose, just a pencil-slim line of graphite and pine. Sumptuously ripe. Truly seductive. Rubenesque and yet terrific balance of cedary wood, dark ripeness and long lofty acidity. Just the right side of stemmy, and a perfectly drawn skein of minty green through the molten fruit. Fine seams of tobacco leaf and fragrant cigar smoke, a touch of dry pine needles. Svelte, tightly woven, and long, long, long into an effortlessly glossy finish that you simply don't want to ever walk away from. Wow."- Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com
