The second wine of Third Growth Chateau Kirwan this is beautifully silky Margaux. Rich and well-balanced with lovely fresh and ripe cassis and cherry fruit that rolls over the palate in a powerful wave.

The effect continues into a long and succulent finish and leaves me thinking this is less a second wine and more a special cuvée.

Château Kirwan’s “second wine” Charmes de Kirwan was initially produced in 1993 and has since then received the same care and improvements over the years as the 1st “Cru” -wine. However, “Charmes” is mainly made from grapes from younger vines. Charmes de Kirwan is made of 28% Cabernet sauvignon, 57% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The harvest is done manually and the grapes are sorted both on the vine and later in the wine cellar. The fermentation takes place in small stainless steel vats and the wine is then stored 16-month aging in barrels with 20% new oak. 50,000 bottles are produced every year.

"The lovely garnet red color points to a wine that is still young, with no sign of aging. The nose is complex, a mix of ripe fruit with fine woody and vanilla notes. After a fresh, gentle attack, the wine has a round, ample and juicy character in the mouth. Aromas of perfectly ripe red and black berries are back once again, complemented by hints of pepper. Discreet, fine-grained tannins make for a lovely length in the mouth. The most eager enthusiasts can enjoy this wine today, keeping in mind that it will continue to age beautifully for the next decade."
