The impressive Aalto winery was founded in 1999 by Mariano Garcia, the erstwhile technical director at Bodegas Vega Sicilia for 30 years, and Javier Zaccagnini. The winery has some tremendous old vine Tempranillo vineyards in many of the finest communes of Ribera del Duero, the fruit from which is vinified in an ultra-modern, gravity-fed winery. The wine that emanates from the Aalto winery, a James Bond villain-style futuristic lair back up in the Ribera del Duero hills, is rapidly becoming a Spanish collector classic: a Ribera del Duero of enormous class, precision and polish.

In The Cellar
100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) primarily from very old vines – 60 to 90 years old – from selected plots in La Horra and La Aguilera. The harvest was done by hand, in small boxes of 15 kilos that are thoroughly inspected, bunch by bunch, on the selection table.

In The Vineyard
The farming year began with a very rainy autumn and mild temperatures. Winter started with fogs, a drastic decrease of temperatures, and ended up with little precipitation and moderate temperatures. Spring started with low temperatures due to a cold front that delayed the sprouting of the vines until late April. The rest of the season developed with unstable weather conditions and storms. High temperatures continued in July and the first fortnight of August, descending at the end of this month, and some storms occurred at that moment. September, as usual, kept soft temperatures during the day and low at night. The harvest started on September 14th.
Modelled in a similar vein to the delicious Aalto Tinto, the PS is that little bit denser, darker and bolder with aromatic top notes of stewed black cherries, black plum compote, sun raisined strawberries, balsamic reduction and brûléed vanilla pod spice. The savoury, earthy density follows to a palate tightly packed with caramelised black and blue fruits, molasses, stewed plum and black cherry, all underpinned by powerful chalky, finely grippy mineral tannins that lend the wine impressive focus and shape in the mouth. A turbo charged Ribera Red that really shows its class. Start drinking in 2-3 years time and enjoy over 10-15+ years.
