A Jancis Robinson MW Curated Case of South African White Wines rated 17 points and above in their recent summary of SA White wines based on a number of SA tastings during the course of the year.
“While modesty, lack of guile, and personal warmth (judging from the many producers I chatted to at the tastings) are as prevalent as they have always been, the wines are finer, more nuanced and more exciting than they have ever been – especially the whites. We’ve been writing for some time (more than 12 years, it would seem) about South Africa’s young guns, next generation and new-wave producers, using these descriptions even as recently as this year, but I wonder if perhaps it’s time to acknowledge that these dynamic South African wine producers are now well established in the firmament. Even the now-ageing first wave of ‘young guns’ are still as exciting, fresh and pioneering as the second, third and fourth waves snapping at their heels. White blends are also thrilling, and it’s interesting to see how cleverly the winemakers are using these blends.” – Tamlyn Currin.
