A Jancis Robinson MW Curated Case of South African Red Wines rated 17.5 points and above in their recent summary of SA Red wines based on a number of SA tastings during the course of the year.
Following last week’s summary of white wine ratings by Jancis Robinson MW, this week they released 162 ratings on a variety of red wine categories.
Among the top scorers being our very own Alex Milner of Natte Valleij’s Darling Cinsault, BOTH vintages (2021 AND 2022) rated 18 points. Though not the only top scorer in the pack, with City on a Hill’s Grenache Noir 2022, and Sk’windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca 2022, also rated 18 points. And good old faithfuls like Ian Naude’s Oupa Willem Red Blend 2020, Stark-Condé Three Pines Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, and Lokaïa’s Call of the Void Cabernet Franc 2021, rated 17.5. Jancis and Tamlyn comment on the quality of SA Syrah specifically, referencing a whole vertical of the fabled Porseleinberg, as well as Sam Lambson’s Minimalist site-specific range of Syrahs, though interestingly it is the old vine Cinsault and niche varieties like Tinta Barocca and Grenache Noir that took top honours.
