“André Bruyns, former assistant winemaker to David and Nadia Sadie, is now vineyard manager at Swartland property Lammershoek (recently under new ownership). He did not release any wines from the 2021 vintage under his City on a Hill label due to difficult trading circumstances but he’s back with a bang with his 2022 new releases.

After years of wondering lost in the deserts of the fine wine world, premium Grenache has finally found its place at the top table, primarily because of wines of this quality being consistently produced in South Africa and further afield in places like Gredos in Spain. Sourced from a vineyard in the Piekenierskloof planted in 2000 using Massal Selection, this 100% whole bunch fermented Grenache Noir is simply spellbinding. Magnificently fine grained, mineral, stony and restrained on the nose to begin, the more delicate aromas of red currant preserve, stewed strawberries, fynbos and garrigue start to emerge to seduce the senses. The palate shows an equally complex, sophisticated demeanour, packed tightly with fine grained mineral stony tannins which are sandwiched in between bright pithy layers of red cherry, cranberry and the most deliciously bright electric acids. A very polished and measured fine wine that shows a real composure, confidence and class – and which says an equal amount about the pedigree of both the vineyards used and the winemaking skills employed by Andre Bruyns. Drink on release after a short decant and cellar for 10+ years. (96+/100 Greg Sherwood MW) [Greg Sherwood, 01/01/2023]
