Description
The 2022 Thamnus Pinot Noir is light in colour but serious in nature. Tilled earth, cured meat, black berries and cherries line the nose, supported by a hint of French oak. Firm and elegant on the palate, with savoury red fruits and chalky tannins. Decant in its youth, or drink to 2032
Producer Profile
Under the towering Klein River mountains, Thamnus Wines is a unique terroir with few surrounding vineyards. The cool-climate conditions and old soils produce an elegant, more old-world style of wine, expressed well in the Burgundian grape varieties. Our Chardonnay is chiselled in style with lime, almond and flinty notes. The Pinot Noir is generally lighter in colour, but shows darker fruit, firm tannins and more savoury notes. Both wines offer 5 years or more of ageing potential.
Multiple clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay across 10 ha of vineyards are naturally farmed, vine by vine. We utilize our sheep in the vineyards during certain periods of the season as part of a regenerative agriculture approach; our sheep are rotated throughout the vineyard, grazing and suppressing weeds and allowing cover crops, later the vineyards, to proliferate. We also offer incredible free-range, naturally farmed lamb, fine olive oil and fynbos honey.
Reviews
Greg Sherwood 94
The 2022 Pinot Noir is at first quite smoky and stony with hints of graphite, struck match and charcoal embers over sour red plum, black berry, curry leaf and bruised ripe strawberry fruits. There is a fullness and ripeness on the palate with a feel of density and extract from the sunshine while remaining stony, flinty and attractively smoky. While there are suggestions of exoticism on the palate, the wine remains unwaveringly elegant, light touch and beautifully focused. [Greg Sherwood MW, 14/02/2025]
