“André Bruyns, former assistant winemaker to David and Nadia Sadie, is now vineyard manager at Swartland property Lammershoek (recently under new ownership). He did not release any wines form the 2021 vintage under his City on a Hill label due to difficult trading circumstances but he’s back with a bang with his 2022 new releases. “”The Swartland has a great affinity for Chenin blanc. Most of the remaining old vineyards in this region is Chenin blanc and produce world class wines. We have worked with many of these vineyards and continue only with the best that we have come across over the years. These grapes come from dry farmed vineyards planted on great sites many years ago. We are very hands on in these vineyards and understand that it requires a lot of detail, dedication and hard work to maintain these old vines. It is worth every bit of energy invested in these vineyards and in the end the wine should show that.”””

"First tasted in March 2023 with Andre in the Swartland, this wine has blossomed over the past six months into something really very exciting. Made from grapes sourced from three Swartland vineyards planted between 1968 and 1981, two on deep decomposed granitic soils and one on iron-rich soils, the aromatics show complex notes of white peach, orange citrus peel, ripe quince, waxy green apples, crunchy pears and intricate hints of incense, dry bushveld and dried herbs. Time in bottle has allowed the silky seamless palate to really flesh out with a concentrated core of sweet yellow orchard fruits, apple puree and a liquid minerality that is framed by a bright, saline line of acidity. This is a wonderfully crafted old vine Chenin Blanc that typifies everything great about this noble cultivar. Drink on release and over the next 8 to 10+ years.
