Founded in 1688 by Frenchman Jacques Malan, Simonsig has always stood out in South Africa’s rich landscape of wineries. Indeed, thanks to the family’s incomparable winemaking experience and tradition, Simonsig-branded wines have always been considered benchmarks for the region, often proving to be innovative. When people talk about Simonsig, they also talk about the history of Méthode Cap Classique, which is the South African classic method first produced by the Stellenbosch winery itself. The year was 1971.
Here s a well-structured Cabernet from a region not necessarily renowned for the variety, and at a nice price to boot. True to type aromas with good depth lead to a palate that shows a mix of blackberry, dried herbs, hints of soft charred oak and earthy minerality, with a fine-tuned balance of all the flavors riding a moderate tannic grip though a blooming finish. Quite impressive in this price category!—- Rich Cook [Rich Cook, 01/01/2019]
A spicy, forward and fruity wine that maintains ample balance. It shows red fruits, spice and dry tannins. This is fresh, elegant and ready to drink now. [/, 01/12/2006]
