Description

CELLAR INFORMATION If you’re a fan of Pinot Noir, we can guarantee you’re going to love this Cinsault. From a farm in a lesser known winemaking region of the Western Cape, Darling, this bottle gets its name from the first time Duncan Savage got lost looking for the vineyard. Duncan called up the farmer for directions who simply said “volg net die f*kken foon lyn!” If you’re not fluent in Afrikaans this translates to “just follow the f***ing phone line!” Always one of our absolute favourites from Duncan Savage, this drinks brilliantly now but feel free to lie it down for 10+ years (if you have the self control). VINEYARD INFORMATION ‘Follow The Line’ continues to be one of South Africa’s most respected old vine Cinsaults. The fruit comes from a 40-year-old dry farmed bush vines in Darling grown on decomposed granite soils. It is spontaneously fermented with 50% of the fruit as whole clusters.

One more vintage after the 2021 release and Duncan Savage will be able to present a decade on vertical of this extraordinary wine that will no doubt tantalise its ardent fans while converting any final sceptics of the true premium gravitas of well sited old vine Cinsault. Sourced from 40+ year old dry farmed bush vines in the ward of Darling grown on decomposed granite soils, the wine underwent spontaneous fermentation using 50% whole clusters before spending two weeks on its skins before being basket pressed into neutral foudre for 10 months of ageing. The 2021 reaches 93% Cinsault with a modest 7% of Syrah blended in to yield a wine that is deep, dark and very serious on the nose, boasting layers of raisined cranberries, dried strawberries, red currants and subtle perfumed hints of rose petals and violets. While the aromatics might be slightly shyer than usual, the palate displays a wonderfully toasty, savoury depth of red and black berry fruits, cherry cordial, wild strawberry and a sappy, spicy finish. There is plenty of depth with supporting structure but also an accessibility with a delicious dark fruited opulence. This looks like a Follow the Line that will be ready to rock n roll on release but will of course prove cellar-worthy for at least another 10 to 12+ years. (10,617 bottles produced.) – Greg Sherwood MW. Not so long ago, the fruit for Follow The Line used to disappear into the Savage Red, but it’s now established as a superb wine in its own right. Fermented with 50% whole bunches, it’s an ethereal cuvee of Cinsault with 7% Syrah, with rose petal, pepper and Turkish Delight notes, strawberry and hibiscus flavours and sculpted tannins. 2023-30 – Tim Atkin MW.
