“For many years Ian worked with Bordeaux style varietals, until Rosa Kruger found this amazing vineyard of Grenache from Agter-Paardeberg. However, after only one vintage (2014) with this block, he lost it until 2019.

Ian says “”I was excited to put my hands on this Grenache again and just like the 2014 – vintage, my main intention was to move away from those typical heavy/fruit/barnyard style Grenache.

Many visits to the vineyard and picking at the ripeness that would make a lighter Grenache

Description

The 2020 Naudé Grenache comes from a standout block in Agter-Paardeberg, where the vines are allowed to evolve with minimal intervention. This wine has a distinct character, developing complexity with each year. It opens with a floral nose, wild strawberry, fragrant spices, and a deep, earthy, meaty intensity. Aged for 12-15 months in French oak barrels, it’s a Grenache that continues to evolve, with the potential to age gracefully for 30+ years. The wine shows a harmonious balance of fruit and spice, making it a truly exceptional red.

Greg Sherwood 96

Attractively light and ethereal in colour, the nose of the 2020 Grenache shows delightful, sweet, sappy red berry fruits, cool crunchy red cherries, earthy red plums, bramble berries and grated red apple skin nuances. The palate is taut, linear and rapier fresh with liquid laser beams, maritime salinity and a tart yet deliciously mouth-watering salty minerality. This is fine wine elegance with extreme precision and crystalline classical power all delivered so deftly. A really incredible expression of Paardeberg / Swartland Grenache. Drink on release and over the next 8 to 15+ years. – Greg Sherwood MW. [Greg Sherwood, 01/01/2023]

Producer Profile

Ian Naudé’s wines are unlike anything else.

His range of wines are made up of esoteric pockets of old and new vines that tell a story about South African heritage. He did so fearlessly, believing that South African wine, if made honestly, and without compromise can come to rival the finest wines in the world. And slowly the international wine cognoscenti have started believing it too, as demonstrated by their rave reviews year-on-year.
