"Named after Bill Winshaw, the eldest son of Dr William Charles Winshaw who founded the Stellenbosch Farmers Winery (SFW), this alternative Cape Bordeaux style is a blend of 82% Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 6% Malbec. Equally dark and opaque in the glass like its Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated sibling, it is on the nose that the extra layers of class start to become apparent with perfumed aromatics of purple violets, rose petals, and Turkish Delight, before attractive layers of red currant, red cherry and cranberry pastille fruits emerge. With time in the glass, some darker black cherry and tart mulberry fruits develop within a supple, soft weightless concentration kissed by a sweet sappy cedar wood spice and delicate complexing dried baking herb notes. Delightfully elegant and supple with a silky mouthfeel and a piercing concentration all wrapped in a most harmonious, seductive assemblage. In 2019, there is certainly no holding the Cabernet Franc fruit quality back, so drink this beauty now on release and over 8 to 10+ years." [Greg Sherwood MW, 01/09/2024]

"Dark and glossy, smoking jackets and cigars and – interestingly – masses of blackcurrant fruit. I say interesting because Cab Franc is usually a red-berry wine, but either these are unusually thick-skinned Cab Franc grapes or that teeny shot of Cab Sav packs a serious punch. Packed with green pepper and fresh dill, white pepper and sumac. The tannins are a bit more scrappy here (than in the Charles Winshaw and their 100% Malbec), but that’s ok because they’re scrappy in a boisterous, friendly way and have a glug of this with a coal-seared sirloin and you’ll want their rowdy welcome." 82% Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec and 6% Stellenbosch. Matured for 20 months in barrel, just over 50% new. Red cherry, cranberry and a hint of cassis to go with fresh herbs, rose and pencil shavings while the palate medium bodied and beautifully poised – pure fruit, good freshness and powdery tannins. Shows the elegance that marks so many of the best examples of this vintage. Alc: 13.5%. [Christian Eedes, 08/03/2024]
