The Crescendo is a true reflection of the terroir from which its grapes originate, and is particularly characteristic of wine made in the historic region of Stellenbosch. It is the Cabernet Franc in particular, where purity of the fruit is amplified by the site on which it is grown. Notes of white pepper, cloves, and red berries gives this wine delightful aromatics to pleasure the senses. The tension in the wine lends itself to an elegant finish, bringing together the various elements in a genteel fashion culminating in a well-polished wine. All grapes on the estate are handpicked and once in the cellar, the grapes are gently transferred by means of gravity to both stainless steel and cement vessels for fermentation. A period of cold soaking follows, which enables the rich extraction of colour, elegant aromas and bright flavour. Extended maceration is undertaken at the conclusion of fermentation, which adds a soft texture, increased colour intensity and complexity to the wine.

Reviews

JancisRobinson.com 16.5/20

60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Smells juicy and fresh with masses of creamy red fruit and green tobacco leaf. The tannins have a sweet bitterness: gently steeped black tea leaves and tree bark. Tight structure but the balance is there. This has plenty of substance and will likely mature elegantly. Could Schalk-Willem Joubert do it again in 2019 after such an impressive maiden release? You bet he could and he has even improved on that predecessor. This is more precise and nuanced, presenting a seamless assemblage of Cabernet Franc with 26% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon from the windy western corner of the Helderberg. Complex, layered and restrained, with perfumed 35% new wood, graphite, red berry, blackcurrant leaf and tarragon flavours and fresh, sea breeze-kissed finish. 2024-35 [Tim Atkin, 31/05/2022]

Greg Sherwood 97

A right bank blend of 65% Cabernet Franc, 26% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Crescendo shows a big, dense, complex nose with deep dark aromatics of black berries, creme de cassis, sweet cedar and grilled herbs intertwined with graphite, macerated black cherries and a dusty crushed gravel minerality. On the palate the wine is incredibly cool, broad and creamy showing immense power and dry extract concentration on the mid-palate together with wonderfully fine grained spicy mineral tannins and a very long, harmonious focused finish. A superbly complete and texturally pinpoint Cape Bordeaux red blend with a truly Grand Vin classical footprint. An iconic block-buster of the future. Make space in the cellar! Producer Profile

This classical wine has remained true to its composition since it was first produced in the 1990’s. A Bordeaux blend of note, dominated by Cabernet franc, amplified by Merlot and complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon.
