Description

CELLAR INFORMATION Rosso is a gentler version of the majestic Brunello. Juicy, with inviting open fruit and associations with cherries, dried fruit and a small splash of cinnamon. Good structure, very tasty and to drink young.

The grapes are de-stemmed, softly pressed and given 12 days of maceration and fermentation in steel tanks. The wine ages from 8 months to a year, depending on the size of the oak casks, and at least 6 months in the bottle.
VINEYARD INFORMATION Montalcino is located on an approx. 550 m high hilltop 30 km. south of Siena. It’s about. 1200 ha. wine in a very hilly landscape with great variations, but generally the fields close to and north of the city are the highest and coolest The name Brunello "the little brown" is due to the fact that it used to be thought that the grape was its own variety, but it is a clone of Sangiovese, which is the main grape in all of Chianti.

The wines have long been respected for quality, but only gained world fame from the 1960s. With the motorway opening nearby, the town’s role as a transit town and general trading center quickly declined, and it had to rebuild itself with wine as a quality product. It succeeded to such an extent that the wine was among the first to receive the strict DOCG appellation in 1980, and there are now approx. 200 growers. The climate is warm for Tuscany with less rain than average and ripening problems are very rarely seen.

Few wines can match the pure unadulterated deliciousness of a lightly oaked Sangiovese from a ripe, lush quality vintage in Montalcino. This 2019 is simply brimming with complex layers of sweet lilac, stewed red cherries, earthy wild strawberries, polished mahogany and subtle salted caramel vanilla pod notes. On the palate the wine is rich and generous with fleshy, mouth-watering layers of sweet black cherry, tart plum, kirsch liquor and salty black currant nuances. So forward, open and giving, this delicious wine holds nothing back and offers up fabulous quality, lovely purity and a lavish berry fruit concentration on the finish. Drink this now and over the next 3 to 5 years. – Greg Sherwood MW. [Greg Sherwood, 01/01/2023]
