Chantal Chevallier met Jean-Pierre Bernard at the Lycée in Beaune. She originates from Savoie, whilst he was raised in the Beaujolais. Chantal’s parents had moved from mixed farming in 1970 to specialise in vineyards. Today, they work thirteen hectares. There are 2ha of Altesse, with 0.75 planted in the cru of Marestel, plus a similar amount of Mondeuse, Jacquère and Gamay. Everything on the domaine is hand-harvested.

    Description

The 2017 Domaine Chevallier, Jongieux, showcases Mondeuse, the region’s most famous red variety. In the cellar, this grape is versatile, allowing for carbonic maceration, traditional methods, or a combination of both, with partial de-stemming and oak-aging enhancing its tannic structure. Mondeuse typically offers a juicy acidity, low alcohol, and a subtle bitter cherry profile. Once more prevalent, Mondeuse almost disappeared post-phylloxera due to its low yields and late ripening. However, it has experienced a local revival, with younger producers seeking to craft authentic, regional wines. This wine highlights the grape’s potential and regional character.

Mondeuse is a typical Savoyard grape (it is one of the grandparents of Syrah). We cultivate it on 3 hectares in the towns of Jongieux and Billieme in Savoy – France. Its clusters are large and the berries are bluish black. This variety produces tannic wines with a crimson red color, robust, rich in aromas of red fruits and spices. [Daniel Grigg, 01/04/2023]
