Uva Mira Mountain Vineyards, The Mira Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2017
Uva Mira benefits from the location of its mountain vineyards, which are 620 metres above sea level at their highest point, as the climate falls into category two on the Winkler Scale. In layman’s terms this means it has a lot more in common with vineyards in France than their South African neighbours. This, alongside the decomposed granite soils, allows them to produce wines which are the finest expression of terroir we’ve seen from anywhere in the New World.
The wine is a luscious deep ruby red in the glass offering a glorious aroma of fresh, ripe cassis and crushed red cherries alongside a complement of fynbos and tobacco leaf. An incredibly finessed and elegant style of cabernet with a wonderful depth of flavour and harmonious integration of the oak, having rested in French barrels for 18months, resulting in an incredibly smooth and silky finish.
This wine has been no stranger to accolades, the 2015 vintage received the coveted 5 star award from John Platter and ‘Best South African Red’ from Mundus Vini. In our opinion the 2016 is the perfect sequel, like Terminator 2 or Aliens.
