Ulithorne, Prospera, Shiraz, McLaren Vale, Australia, 2014
Gaining a cult status among top wine journalists for their elegant, fruit-driven and complex wines, Ulithorne Wines was established in 1969 and is located in the heart of the McLaren Vale. Their philosophy is to craft premium wines which reflect the singularity of their source. Their obsession with ‘the source’ acknowledges the concept of terroir and applies it with meticulous individual attention. Taking influence from the Rhône Valley, the winemaking focuses the very minutiae of terroir and the recognition of how the unique characteristics of this ancient land influence each vine and its fruit. Ulithorne Wines’ philosophy of singularity leads to tiny batches of highly acclaimed wines which capture the very essence of their terroir.
A wine that celebrates the elegance and intensity of flavours that old bush vine Shiraz from the deep sands of Amery Hill can bring to the table. With spice and ripe cherries on the nose, followed by deep red fruits and rich plums on an elegantly weighted palate, the flavours are balanced by soft tannins.
