Stark-Condé, The Field Blend, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2020
This is a barrel-fermented white blend of Roussanne (54%) Chenin Blanc (30%), , Verdelho (9%) and Viognier (7%). This is a single-vineyard wine from the first vineyard you see when you drive on to our Oude Nektar farm. It is a tricky block, with a mix of soils and they tried to turn that into a positive by planting it as a blend.
The grapes are all picked at the same time and pressed and fermented together as a true “field blend” 100% barrel fermented in mostly older, neutral oak. An elegant blend combining the richness of Roussanne and Viognier with the bright fruits and natural acidity of Chenin and Verdelho.
This is the most highly awarded vintage of The Field Blend to date, having been scored with 17.5 by Jancis Robinson, 95 points from Tim Atkin, 94 points from Decanter, Five Stars (95+) by John Platter and also being named Best White Blend in the Old Mutual National Trophy awards.
