Restless River, Wanderlust, Pinot Noir, South Africa, 2020

The Wanderlust project allows Craig Wessels to flex his creative muscles – the wine changes every year, inspired by the lesser-known, the unconventional and the long-forgotten. And in 2020 – a Pinot Noir, inspired by the Cistercian monks of Burgundy, doing things the ultra-old fashioned way, with lots of buckets, foot stomping and gravity! And it’s a beautiful thing. Translucent, lifted red fruit, with a hint of tea leaves and umami, and fragrant cherry blossom, a  sprinkle of spice and gentle hint of forest fruits and moss too. The palate is so invigorating – just a hint of savoury, leather and earthiness, with fine tannins and very long finish. Both ethereal and nicely concentrated on the finish too. Drinking well now and will age beautifully.
