Naudé, Old Vines Oupa Willem, Western Cape, South Africa, 2018
Ian never had the opportunity to meet his Oupa (Grandpa) Willem, but was told so many wonderful stories about him. One of his fondest was hearing that his horse and dog always came first, and the rest of the world, second. No question, he was my grandfather.
Of this wine Ian says “For a long time I have wanted to make a Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon blend. I have tasted and enjoyed many of these blends that date back to the 60’s / 70’s. They are still aging gracefully, drinking beautifully, and I believe we are losing out on our heritage by not sticking to these classics.
In naming this Cape Heritage Blend, I kept going back to Oupa Willem. I believe his spirit and his stories are inherent in this wine, and I hope he would be proud to know that.”
The 2018 is the maiden release of this wine but we’re not its only fans, it received the coveted Five Star accolade from John Platter as well as a score of 17.5 from Jancis Robinson with the below tasting note:
“Spicy, exciting, packed with edgy Cab herbs and and Cab power, sweet Cinsault fruit and Cinsault silk. Bay leaf through redcurrant, box leaf through cranberry, smoky jazz, violets. Aérienne yet kerpow with flavour. This is seriously exciting.”
