Langpad trans

Naudé, Langpad, Colombard, Western Cape, South Africa, 2021

Ian Naudé chose the name Langpad, which means Long Road in Afrikaans, for his inaugural release of Colmbard because the cultivar was the first white varietal planted in South Africa 350 years ago and also because it is a four and a half hour drive north of Stellenbosch.

The 2020 vintage was his maiden release and heralded with fantastical acclaim, yet the 2021 seems somehow even more complete and has already been rated 95+ by Greg Sherwood. A saline minerality, oyster shell, peach, samphire & lemon curd.

And that’s not all, Langpad was named ‘Wine of the Year’ by John Platter alongside a Five Star score but our favourite accolade must be the 17/20 score from Tamlyn Currin, writing for Jancis Robinson which was accompanied by the below tasting note:

“It has the steely, tightly focused, slice-of-a-knife acidity and structure of a Grosses Gewächs Riesling. It has the power of a particularly fine Austrian Grüner Veltliner. It’s not quite like anything I’ve tasted before. And this is lowly unloved Colombard…!”
