Natte Valleij, P.O.W, Simonsberg-Paarl, South Africa, 2016
Lovingly and painstakingly crafted with minimal interference and pretence, the old vine fruit is hand harvested and then hand sorted in the cellar to ensure only the best quality grapes are used to make the wine. The juice is then aged firstly in 225L barrels for 12 months followed by 500L barrels for 24 months, this method helps to preserve the natural fruit character of the wine which could otherwise be lost in this extensive barrel ageing period that allows the wines to evolve and become fascinating.
The wine is a dark vibrant red in the glass offering wofts of plum and mulberry fruit. These characteristics continue on the palate and are complemented by a cacao freshness on the finish. There is a purity of fruit which is so indicative of wines made from grapes grown in close proximity to the Simonsberg mountain. The depth and complexity of the wine will allow it to age for many years to come.
