Moreson, MKM Moraka Klaas Maffa, Pinotage, Western Cape, South Africa, 2016
Pinotage, possibly the most ‘marmite’ of all grapes in the world of wine, gets a bit of a bad rap owing to the mass produced entry level wines pumped out exhibiting little more character than a burnt out tyre. Moreson’s MKM Pinotage, the big brother of Widowmaker (our best selling wine), is leading the charge to dispel this common misconception and show those willing to give it a chance just how complex and exciting this grape can be.
This wine performs at its best when allowed to breathe, a couple of hours in a decanter transforms the wine enabling it to develop into something with a depth of flavour more akin to what you’d expect from a very serious Southern Rhone or Mourvedre dominated Bandol wine. The garrigue herb character is undeniable but is then complemented by a dark, brooding and luscious compote of blackberry and cassis fruit. A truly wondrous thing and a must try for any wine enthusiast.
MKM received critical acclaim in 2018 being awarded a Gold medal in Decanter’s World Wine Awards with a score of 95 points out of 100.
