Le Seigneur du Raveil, Vacqueyras, France, 2016
Vacqueyras is an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in the southern Rhone producing some fantastic value wines, usually more restrained than the likes of the famed Châteauneuf-du-Pape and neighbouring Gigondas, and normally slightly cheaper too! Bonus!
This wine is no exception. The blend consists of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 5% Mouvèdre and 5% Cinsault and the high proportion of Grenache in the blend is reflected in a palate full of rich, juicy, dark fruit. Cassis and black cherry are dominant alongside soft spice and an earthy notes. Bold tannins and high alcohol make this a big wine, but it’s by no means unbalanced. A perfect winter warmer when paired with a rich beef dish.
