Gaja, Darmagi, Langhe, Italy, 2015

Planted in 1978, Darmagi is Angelo Gaja’s tribute to the prestigious Cabernet Sauvignon variety, and a clear sign of the peculiar Langhe expression in wines, even from non-traditional varieties.

“100% Cabernet Sauvignon planted by Angelo Gaja following a soil analysis conducted in Bordeaux determined the perfect spot on their Langhe estate for the French cultivar. That spot happened to be right in front of the home of Giovanni Gaja who declared “Darmagi!” – an Italian saying meaning “what a shame” due to his adversity to Cabernet. Brave? Stupid? Genius? Maybe a blend of three but for me this is pitch perfect, a balancing act of Northern Italian tension & vigour alongside the natural opulence of Cabernet”
