Deux Frères, Sauvignon Blanc, Stellenbosch, 2020
This is the only South African Sauvignon Blanc certified under the Old Vines Project from a vineyard planted in 1985. Deux Frères only made 1,800 bottles which is an extraordinarily low production for a wine at less than £20.
Initially I thought it had seen some old oak given its refined texture yet in fact it has only had three months on its lees, followed by two months on the gross lees which underlines the quality of fruit and attention to detail which bestows it with its gravitas and poise.
Pale straw color with rich upfront fruit flavor of Cape Gooseberry, Pineapple, Apple and ripe Melon. The mid palate has a good weight and balance with a velvety acidity that finishes in a long lingering aftertaste of roundness, freshness and fruitiness.
